ATLANTA -- With most of their band uniforms damaged, and in true Maroon Tiger spirit, members of the Morehouse College marching band took to the field Saturday for a special performance in more ways than one.
SLIDESHOW: Morehouse Band Performs 1 Week After Bus Crash
Just one week ago, some band members were involved in a bus accident along Interstate 75 in Henry County. The bus was one of three en route to a game at Albany State University in Albany. The other buses were not involved, police said.Investigators said approximately 42 people were aboard the bus when it overturned.Drum major Christopher Allison, a senior music composition major from Durham, N.C., was aboard the bus.“It was life-changing,” said Allison. “I remember when the bus swerved and when it flipped.”Allison suffered several injuries, including a concussion, three broken ribs and a dislocated scolder. For Saturday’s performance, band members wore T-shirts and received help from the alumni band because some students were still unable to perform. The performance sent a strong message, as the Maroon Tigers battled Miles College in the last football game of the season.“It’s like my prayers were answered,” said band director Melvin Jones. “I hope the students can see the enduring human spirit. People who have never seen the band perform were genuinely concerned all over the world.”
