Sheriff: Judge's Assistant Brought Gun Into Courthouse

Posted: 4:32 pm EST November 4, 2009Updated: 6:08 am EST November 5, 2009

A judge’s assistant has been suspended and sheriff’s office employees could face disciplinary action after they allowed the assistant to bring her gun into the courthouse.

The sheriff said many things went wrong -- including the fact his deputies never obtained the worker’s gun or saw it.

“Everything that should have happened did not happen,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown.

Brown said he is not happy deputies allowed a judge’s assistant to not only bring her pistol inside the courthouse, but also take it back out when they confronted her.

“To say that we did not follow the procedures and do what I was expecting is an understatement,” said Brown.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office officials said Superior Court Judge Greg Adams’ judicial assistant brought the gun through the employee’s entrance in her bag.

It was very busy, but the detention technician noticed it on the X-ray machine.

“She saw it and wasn’t quite sure if what she was looking at is what she was looking at,” said Brown.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones asked Brown, “But she should have made sure it was what she thought it was, shouldn’t she?”

“I’m not disagreeing with that,” answered Brown.

The judge’s assistant went up to the fifth floor with her gun.

Deputies, realizing it was definitely a gun, went up and asked the worker to come back downstairs.

“The young lady, instead of coming downstairs, went to her car, put the weapon in the car and then came back into the courthouse,” said Brown.

Jones asked, “So you guys never saw the weapon?”

“We never saw the weapon,” said Brown.

Brown said the worker should have been detained. When Jones asked why she wasn’t charged, he answered, “There was no intent on her to do harm. This was an accident.”

The sheriff said his office can look at intent when determining whether to charge someone who brings a gun in the courthouse.

The worker was suspended but is back to work. She did not return Jones’ calls. Judge Adams had no comment.
