Police Shoot, Kill Suspect Who Tried To Run Over Deputy

A Douglas County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a driver who allegedly tried to run him over Monday afternoon.

The incident happened at the Maxham Plaza on Maxham Road in Austell just before 4:30 p.m.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt talked with Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller said the call first came in as a suspicious person at a storage facility. Officials said a witness saw someone jump the fence.

Deputies arrived on the scene at a nearby parking lot and confronted the suspect as he came back over the fence and got into his vehicle.

The sheriff said the suspect did not comply with his deputies demands, put the car into gear and drove at the two deputies.

"He then puts his car in drive and lunges at the officer. The officer falls down, the other officer fires at the defendant and he puts it in reverse when the officer fires at him and that's where this car winds up," said Miller.

The car ended up on the sidewalk in front of a pawn shop. Four bullet holes could be seen in the suspect's Chevy Malibu.

The suspect was wounded and was taken to the hospital. He later died at the hospital.

The two deputies are expected to be OK.

Police said a bag containing stolen items from a burglary earlier Monday was found in the suspect's car.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.

The suspect's name has not been released.
