Police: Woman Kills Man, Turns Gun On Herself

Gwinnett County police said Margie Gibbs, 67, of Columbus, shot a man and then turned the gun on herself.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. Saturday on West Rock Quarry Road in Buford.

Police said they received a call about suspicious activity in the area.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying near a maroon Toyota Tacoma and Gibbs lying nearby. Police said they also found a handgun on the ground a few feet from Gibbs.

Police said Jimmy Watts, 53, of Tiger, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene by Gwinnett County medical personnel. Authorities said he was shot multiple times.

Gibbs was taken to the Gwinnett Medical Center where she later died.

Authorities said Gibbs was driving Watts back to the halfway house at Phillips State Prison when she apparently stopped the pickup truck, pulled a revolver and shot Watts.

Police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said Watts got out of the truck after he was shot once and Gibbs got out and shot him multiple times.

Watts was two days away from being paroled on a cocaine conviction for which he had served 3 1/2 years. He did his work release program with Gibbs cleaning office buildings.

Investigators said they haven’t determined a motive behind the shooting.
