Gwinnett County police have charged a mother after they said she tried to suffocate her daughter in a Kudzu patch.

Police said the mother called 911 just after 1 a.m. Friday to her home on Tumlin Trace. The woman told 911 dispatchers she believed her 4-year-old daughter was dead.

When police arrived at the home, they found the 4-year-old girl outside the house in a nearby area that was covered with Kudzu vines. Police said the child was alone and crying and was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for examination.

"Officers responded to the scene and they located the child in a nearby Kudzu patch. The child was crying, wet, and very frightened," said Officer Brian Kelly with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Detectives responded to the scene and after a preliminary investigation determined the child's mother had taken the child to the Kudzu patch and had attempted to suffocate her, according to police.

Police said a motive surrounding the incident is unclear.

The child's mother was identified as Christina Tetteh, 41, of Lawrenceville. She was charged with one count of criminal attempt to commit murder.

Tetteh was transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center where she is being held without bond.

The custody of the victim has been given to the Department of Family and Childrens Services until a hearing can be held by Gwinnett County Juvenile Court to determine appropriate custodial arrangements.
