Tennis Instructor Shot During Home Invasion In Cobb

Posted: 4:42 pm EDT July 14, 2009Updated: 6:51 pm EDT July 14, 2009

Cobb County police searched Tuesday for the man who shot a tennis instructor and tied up several others inside his home during an apparent home invasion.

Cobb County police said the armed home invader tried to tie up all the people inside the home on Nickajack Road in Mableton, but as he left to apparently rob the place, one man was able to get loose and go for a gun of his own.

"There was a confrontation there where shots were exchanged between both the suspect and the individual who retrieved his own gun," said Officer Joe Hernandez with the Cobb County Police Department.

The homeowner was wounded. The home invader was also possibly wounded, but he was able to run away, police said.

Neighbors said the homeowner is a popular tennis instructor who would teach students at a backyard court. Investigators would not say if any students were in the house at the time.

Police posted officers at nearby hospitals waiting for the suspect with a gunshot wound to possibly visit the emergency room.

"Obviously we'll want to keep our house a little bit more secure. I'm close to the point where I'm going to get a gun for myself and protect my family in my own home," said a neighbor.

Just after 5 p.m., a resident reported hearing gunshots near a park about 100 yards away from the home invasion. Police said they were concerned the gunshots in the park may have some relation to the home invasion, so police spent Tuesday afternoon going through the trails in the park looking for a possible gunman.
