Shooting Suspect Caught After Fleeing Interrogation Room

Police say a man who escaped while being questioned in connection with a shootout near Clark Atlanta University has been caught.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young was the first reporter to confirm that the suspect had been captured Thursday after escaping from Atlanta police headquarters Wednesday. The suspect was captured on Magnolia Way in northwest Atlanta.

Police said the man was able to take off leg irons, slip out the backdoor and flee on foot.

“The Atlanta Police Department is in the process of evaluating all security features installed in the new police headquarters," the department said in a statement.

"In addition to evaluating the security features of the building, the Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a thorough administrative investigation into the procedures of all personnel involved with this incident."

The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon near the campus of Clark Atlanta University.

A representative for Clark Atlanta University told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young Wednesday that university police spotted two men arguing on a nearby street with guns. The representative said that when university police officers asked the men to drop their weapons, the men refused.

A representative said the men fired in the direction of the officers, at which point the officers returned fire, striking one of the men.

The unidentified man was listed in critical condition Wednesday, police said.

The Atlanta Police Department took over the investigation Wednesday.
