Car Supposed To Be In Repair Shop; Owner Gets Toll Ticket

Posted: 7:30 am EDT July 7, 2009Updated: 9:37 am EDT July 7, 2009

A DeKalb County man thought his Jaguar was in the shop until a ticket from the state clued him in. The car was actually on Georgia 400 with someone else in the driver's seat. What's worse? The mystery driver didn't pay the toll.

Channel 2 Action News consumer investigator Jim Strickland looked for answers and found the mystery driver at the repair shop. The owner admitted he took the car home -- and said he'd do it again.

"I drive a Jaguar. 2000. S-type series," said Darryl Taylor.

Taylor is not the only one.

His car had been in the shop at Automotive Service and Repair for weeks. The shop let him keep it there until Taylor could afford to pay the bill.

"My intent was to go and pick the car up on Friday. But Thursday, I received this ticket in the mail," said Taylor.

A Georgia 400 toll camera took a picture of his car going through the Cruise Card lane #13 southbound on 400. The incident happened weeks after the car had been fixed.

"To see my tag number there, I'm like, 'Man, I wasn't driving this car,'" said Taylor.

Dale Ferris was.

"I looked at his car and I was like, 'Man, that thing needs a good run,'" said Ferris.

Ferris, the repair shop owner, said after providing weeks of free storage he wanted to make sure the spark plugs were clean and that the battery wasn't run down.

"I'm not out sporting around in his car styling. I've got one of my own," said Ferris.

The odometer reading is 87 miles higher than when the car came in. Ferris said that is from test drives before and after the repair -- and that one trip to his house in Roswell.

"I stand behind my decision to do what I did. I was doing him a favor," said Ferris.

Ferris admitted he should've alerted Taylor before taking the car home.

"I don't think any other dealership would've driven my car home," said Taylor.

Strickland checked with the Better Business Bureau and Automotive Service and Repair had an A- rating. Ferris did pay the toll ticket and continues to waive the $20 a day storage fee, but he said if Taylor doesn't pick up his Jaguar soon and pay the bill, the storage meter is going to start running.
