Karen Handel Upset Over Altered Wikipedia Entry

Posted: 5:14 pm EDT July 2, 2009Updated: 7:47 pm EDT July 2, 2009

Secretary of State Karen Handel, a Republican running for governor, wants to set the record straight about her education.

“For the record, yes, I have a high school diploma,” said Handel.

Handel told Channel 2 Action News political reporter Lori Geary that someone changed that information on her Wikipedia page, claiming that she had a GED.

Wikipedia, which calls itself a free online encyclopedia, allows anyone to edit the information.

“Good grief... going in and putting in complete lies on a person's Wikipedia page?” said Handel.

“The same user account has altered John Oxendine's biography to make it very positive for him,” said Erick Erickson, a Handel supporter and editor of the popular Georgia political blog Peach Pundit.

Oxendine is considered the Republican frontrunner.

Erickson caused a firestorm when he pointed the finger at a member of Oxendine's campaign.

Erickson showed Geary documents that he said prove the change was made on a state computer.

“I know it came from the Sloppy Floyd building,” said Erickson.

Oxendine's campaign fired back and sent Geary a copy of a sworn affidavit from the accused denying the accusations.

"This is politics at its worse and one of the reasons that people are so turned off to being involved in political campaigns,” said Oxendine's campaign manager Tim Echols in a written statement. “We believe that the real story here is that a supporter of Karen Handel has initiated a negative attack without offering any evidence."

“That still doesn't disprove the fact that someone supportive of John Oxendine from the Sloppy Floyd building altered Karen Handel's biography,” said Erickson.

Oxendine told Geary that the computer used in the Sloppy Floyd building was not in his department.

“I have no idea who did this... all I would like to really believe is that one of my opponents would not have engaged in something this low,” said Handel

“If anyone from my team did anything like that, that individual would be fired,” said Handel.

But this isn’t the first time something like this has happened in Georgia.

Democrat Cathy Cox's campaign manager resigned four years ago after someone in her campaign edited the Wikepedia page of her opponent Mark Taylor in the governor's race.
