Police: Suspect Steals Cash In Craigslist Scam

Posted: 2:56 pm EDT July 2, 2009

The DeKalb County Police Department is alerting the public to be cautious when purchasing vehicles from the online Website Craigslist.

Police said they are currently investigating four cases where victims responding to a car sale ad were allegedly scammed out of hundreds of dollars.

According to detectives, the victims responded to postings by the suspect on Craigslist offering a Chrysler PT Cruiser and a GMC Yukon for sale. The suspect would then set a meeting with the victim to test drive one of the cars. During the test drive, the suspect would request deposits from the victims ranging from $500 to $1600. The suspect would then coax them from the vehicle and flee with the victims’ deposit money and cell phones, police said.

Detectives have identified a suspect and have secured warrants of theft by deception on him. Due to the ongoing investigating additional information on this suspect is not presently being released, police said.

Anyone with information in the case is encouraged to contact the DeKalb County Police Department at 404.286.7976.
