A Johns Creek man died Wednesday after being shot during an exchange of gunfire with an off-duty Atlanta cop and a Johns Creek police officer.

The off-duty Atlanta police officer heard gunfire outside his home just before 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Abbott's Station Subdivision on Abbott's Station Drive, near Medlock Bridge Road.

The officer rushed outside to see neighbor Gregory Wayne Keith, 56, firing a gun. The cop ordered the Keith to drop the gun. Keith refused and the two men fired at each other. The police officer hit Keith, according to Chief Ed Densmore of the Johns Creek Police Department.

At that point Johns Creek officers arrived. More shots were fired and Keith was hit again, Densmore said.

Keith was taken to Emory Johns Creek Hospital where he died.

The Johns Creeks officer, who was not hurt, are on paid administrative leave.
