Another Student Robbed Near Georgia Tech

Less than 10 hours after police promised to step up patrols in a crime-riddled area near Georgia Tech, armed robbers held up another student.

Eric Mills said he was walking on Hunnicutt Street about 1 a.m. Wednesday, heading toward his apartment in the Centennial Place complex.

"I'm on the phone, talking, all of a sudden I felt a presence behind me," Mills told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young. "As I turned around I see two guys dressed in black."

Mills said one of the men had a gun.

"The other one was coming towards me a little more aggresive," said Mills. Both robbers were wearing masks.

The thieves demanded Mills' phone. "But I threw my book bag down thinking it was more valuable, because my book bag has my laptop in it," explained Mills.

Afraid he was about to be shot, Mills moved behind a parked car.

"Dancing behind the car, the guy with the gun said he was going to shoot me," Mills said. "I said 'You've got my book bag,' and he said 'I want your phone.'"

Mills said that's when he started running. He suffered cuts on his hands and elbow when he fell in the street.

The thieves took off with Mills' book bag and laptop.

Mills said the gunman's mask didn't completely cover his face, "but I really wasn't paying attention to his face; I'm looking at the gun, thinking he's going to shoot me."

A Georgia Tech graduate student was robbed Tuesday morning on Luckie Street, about a block away from the latest incident.

Police and university officials said during a news conference Tuesday that they do not believe college students are being targeted but are likely to be out at night when robbers commonly strike.

On Saturday night, a student had his iPhone, money and sunglasses stolen by an armed robber.

Police announced Tuesday they've made two arrests in the May carjacking of 23-year-old Georgia Tech student Patrick Whaley, who was shot in the back.

The suspects face several charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping and armed robbery.

Charges are pending against a third person, who is in custody on unrelated charges.
