Neighbor Accused Of Attacking Austell Woman

Posted: 10:26 am EDT June 10, 2009Updated: 1:43 pm EDT June 10, 2009

Police in Austell said they expect to formally charge a man Wednesday in the alleged attack on his neighbor.

The alleged victim said prayer, her daughter, and Austell police all came together to stop her attacker.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Mark Winne was there when the suspect, Anthony Pruitt, 37, was taken into custody Tuesday night.

“Did you attack a woman,” asked Winne.

“No comment,” said Pruitt.

“No comment,” asked Winne.

“No, I did not,” said Pruitt.

Pruitt is the neighbor Francesca Cowan said forced his way into her home and attacked her.

“When I said no to his advances, he pushed me in the bathroom and beat my head up against the sink,” said Cowan.

Cowan said she screamed to her 16-year-old daughter for help.

“My mom was saying, ‘No, no, no.’ Then she said, ‘Ariel call 911, Ariel call 911,’” said Ariel Hairston, the victim's daughter.

But, before police could arrive, Cowan said Pruitt stopped. She said she believes it was divine intervention.

“He put my head in the toilet about three times and then I just said to him, ‘In the name of Jesus stop.’ And he was startled. And I said, ‘In the name of Jesus stop,’ and I just kept saying it. And finally, he stopped,” said Cowan.

“Apparently, my mom didn’t even know that I had even called the police,” said Hairston.

“The police came through the door with their guns drawn and then he ran out the front door and they arrested him. But Jesus saved me,” said Cowan.

Cowan gave Austell police many thanks for the officers’ quick response.

Pruitt was taken to the Cobb County Jail.

He has been charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment, pandering, and battery with physical visible harm.
