Woman Crushed Between 2 Trucks, Killed

Posted: 3:40 pm EDT June 8, 2009Updated: 7:50 am EDT June 9, 2009

Investigators said Sabrina Stanek, a mother of two, was trying to tell a driver in her Gwinnett County neighborhood to slow down -- when he ran her over.

The crash happened on Belmont Lane in Lawrenceville Sunday night.

Ashley Hawk said she rushed to help her close friend moments after she was struck by a Ford pickup truck.

Hawk said the driver, Constantine Toncz, 39, had been speeding several times down the neighborhood street Sunday night. The speed limit in the residential area is 25 mph.

When Stanek, 25, ran out to the side of the road to wave him down, police said Toncz ran off the road and hit the young woman -- crushing her between the front of his truck and another truck parked off the street.

“And I checked her pulse, even though I knew…I knew she was gone. And she was just lying there completely lifeless,” said Hawk.

Hawk said the driver who struck her friend stopped, walked up, and asked if he had hit a garbage can.

“And we said, ‘You hit our best friend,’ and he looked down and he saw the body, and he said some profanity, and then (he) parked his truck at the end of the road, and fled,” said Hawk.

Toncz was located a short time later.

“The responding officers were able to apprehend the driver in the neighborhood,” said Sgt. Christopher Ralson with the Lawrenceville Police Department.

Friends of Stanek described her as a devoted mother to her children, Cira and Cody, ages four and five.

“She gave everything to everyone before anyone else. She was the best friend, she was the best daughter, the best mother in the world. She loved her kids more than anything,” said Hawk.

Toncz has been charged with felony vehicular homicide, DUI, and felony leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held in the Gwinnett County Jail.
