Man Dies In East Point Police Custody

East Point police are investigating how a man died Friday night while in police custody.

According to police, 911 dispatchers received multiple reports of a man on foot running in and out of traffic near the intersection of State Route 166 and Stanton Road at about 10:50 p.m.

Officers said that when they arrived, Rodney Winfrey had moved to the intersection of Stanton Road and Allison Court, and was posing a danger to both himself and passing motorists.

Police said it appeared Winfrey was suffering from injuries to his arms and legs and because he continued to dart in and out of traffic, officers were forced to restrain him with handcuffs to prevent further injuries.

Paramedics were called to the scene. Police said while Winfrey was being treated by EMS, he became unresponsive and was transported to South Fulton Medical Center, where he later died.

Winfrey's family told Channel 2 Action News reporter Darryn Moore that they don't feel they're getting the entire story from police about how the incident unfolded.

"We want to know what happened between the time he was restrained and the time police came," said Winfrey's cousin Tiphani Arnold.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office and the Fulton County District Attorney’s office were notified of the incident.

Police said the officers involved in the incident have since been placed on paid administrative leave, according to departmental policy.
