Caregiver Accused Of Leaving Woman On Floor

Posted: 5:02 pm EDT May 28, 2009Updated: 5:39 pm EDT May 28, 2009

Police in Cobb County have arrested two caregivers and charged them with elder abuse after two separate incidents at allegedly unlicensed care homes.

Neighbors said dozens of police, fire and rescue units descended upon the four small homes Thursday.

"The police pulled in. And I saw, several other cars, like six or seven other cars, behind them," said one neighbor.

"I was wondering what was happening," said another neighbor.

Neighbors said they learned later most of the residents were taken by the state and two managers of the personal care home were arrested.

Police charged Mona Foster and Alice Lee Jackson with exploiting the elderly and reckless conduct.

The pair took care of elderly and disabled people in the small homes around Austell, even though city officials said they were not properly licensed.

Foster was charged in connection with an incident in which a diabetic woman was allegedly denied food for so long, she had to be rushed to the hospital.

Jackson is charged in connection with an incident in which a woman allegedly fell near her bed, but wasn’t found or helped up off the floor until the following day.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt went to the neighborhood in Austell to talk to neighbors. Some neighbors said they had complained for a year about abuse in the homes, while others said they hadn’t seen anything wrong.

“I mean, these are people that someone is supposed to be caring for and they do them like that? That’s really sad,” said one neighbor.

One employee told Cavitt there is confusion about if the care homes were properly licensed or not. She said the only person who could answer that is Foster, who is currently in the Cobb County Jail.
