Police Find Mom Hiding With Dying Toddler

Gwinnett County officials said they are investigating after an 18-month-old child died Friday during an apparent welfare check.

Gwinnett County officers accompanied a representative from the Gwinnett County Department of Family and Children Services to a home on Oakland Road in Lawrenceville Friday evening.

Officials were conducting a welfare check on a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old child after it had been reported the children were being left at the residence unattended and in unsanitary conditions.

Officers said they knocked on the door and heard the sound of a baby yelling out and then quickly stop. Police said they feared the child was in trouble, so they entered the home through an open back door.

While attempting to locate the child, an officer noticed in a closet, a large section of drywall had been cut out. Further investigation revealed a woman inside the crawl space holding a child. Officers said they observed that the child was extremely pale and lifeless.

When a pulse could not be located on the child, an officer began to perform CPR. The child was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where medical personnel were able to regain a pulse. The child was then life-flighted to Scottish Rite Children’s hospital to be further treated.

Monday, investigators were informed that the child had died.

An autopsy will be scheduled with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.

The woman in the crawl space was identified as the child's mother. Jessica Holcomb, 26, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with one count of cruelty to children in the 1st degree.

Police said they continue to investigate.
