2nd Swine Flu Case Hits Metro Atlanta School

Posted: 4:13 pm EDT May 6, 2009Updated: 6:42 pm EDT May 6, 2009

Channel 2 Action News learned Wednesday there's a probable second case of swine flu at the Henry County private school that plans to reopen Thursday morning.

Clayton County officials confirmed to Channel 2 Action News reporter Jodie Fleischer that a 13-year-old boy who attends Eagle's Landing Christain Academy in Henry County tested positive for swine flu.

The boy was treated at Kaiser Southwood doctor's office in Jonesboro Tuesday. Tests at the state lab came back positive for swine flu; officials are still waiting for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to confirm the diagnosis.

On Monday, state health officials said another student at Eagle's Landing, a 14-year-old boy, has the virus, prompting the private school to shut down. It is scheduled to reopen Thursday morning.

Administrators at the school were not aware of the probable second case Wednesday afternoon.

Clayton health officials said they don't know if the two boys at Eagle's Landing are friends because privacy laws prevent them from telling either boy who the other is.

"There is a probability that there is a connection between the two students," said Veronda Griffin of the Clayton County Board of Health.

The school was the first and, so far, the only one in Georgia to cancel classes because of the outbreak.

State officials said there are three other new probable swine flu cases in Georgia, including two members of the military in Augusta and an 8-year-old in Clayton County.

A 3-year-old child in Cobb County, a 36-year-old pregnant woman in DeKalb County also tested positive for the flu earlier this week.

Last week, a 30-year-old Kentucky woman was hospitalized in LaGrange, Ga., while attending a wedding. The woman, who had traveled to Mexico, is in stable condition. The CDC considers her a Kentucky case even though she was hospitalized in Georgia.
