Fire officials were called to the scene of a tour bus fire on Interstate 285 eastbound at Peachtree Dunwoody just after 4 p.m. Friday.

According to the Sandy Springs Police Department, 41 college students from the University of Alabama-Huntsville were aboard the bus. The students are visiting metro Atlanta to compete in a track and field event and were headed to a hotel on Buford Hwy. in Doraville.

The fire caused traffic to back up during the Friday afternoon rush hour.

Witnesses said huge flames could be seen shooting out of the back of the bus. The fire has since been extinguished.

Passengers aboard the bus could be seen on the side of the interstate. No injuries were reported.

Jamie Gilliam, UAH assistant sports information director, said the school's athletes probably lost all their gear. Gilliam said the men's and women's teams were headed to the Division II South Regional Championship at Morehouse College.

The students were taken to a metro Atlanta Holiday Inn via a MARTA bus.
