Michael Vick Out Of Federal Prison

Michael Vick is out of federal prison in Kansas.

A contact with the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to Channel 2 Action News reporter Scott MacFarlane that Vick was in transit Wednesday. He’s likely headed to his home state of Virginia, where Vick is scheduled to appear at a federal bankruptcy hearing April 2. He also could be en route to his own house.

U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Felicia Ponce confirmed Vick was removed from the Leavenworth federal prison at 1:36 p.m. Tuesday. Ponce said members of the U.S. Marshal’s service are supervising Vick during transit from the prison, but Ponce would not confirm Vick’s destination.

The prison bureau often “staggers” its information on a delayed basis. The bureau’s “IN TRANSIT” listing for Vick was released late Wednesday morning. The prison bureau refuses to release information about where an inmate is headed until long after the inmate’s arrival. A spokeswoman said this policy is designed to ensure inmates’ safety.

There are also new indications that Vick’s official transfer into a Virginia halfway house or home confinement is nearing. Channel 2 Action News has confirmed a Virginia office of Habitat for Humanity has recently rejected a request to have Vick begin volunteering with the organization.

A statement from Habitat’s Newport News, Va. executive director reads:

“Thank you for your inquiry regarding Michael Vick. Persons familiar with Michael Vick approached Habitat for Humanity Peninsula to ask whether he could work with our non-profit that provides low-income families with simple, decent and affordable housing. We evaluated the request but have determined that we will not have a suitable worksite available at the time of his release from prison. We have therefore advised Mr. Vick that although we appreciate his interest, we cannot provide him with this employment opportunity. Thank you again for your support of our mission to help low-income families with simple, decent and affordable housing. “

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback was serving a 23-month sentence at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. for animal fighting.

Vick is immersed in a lengthy battle over his finances. Vick filed for federal bankruptcy protection in July 2008 amid a series of financial problems stemming from his imprisonment and removal from the NFL.
