Jogger Attacked, Stabbed In DeKalb County

A female jogger was attacked and stabbed multiple times Tuesday morning in DeKalb County before another runner rushed to her aid, frightening off the attacker.

The woman was attacked at the intersection of Southland Vista Court and Briarcliff Road about 7 a.m., according to witnesses.

"I heard a woman screaming across the street," Gilbert Treadwell told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones. "I saw two people tussling."

Treadwell was still in his car getting ready for his own run. He said he instinctively drove toward the woman and her attacker.

"I didn't think about it; you hear a woman in distress and you go to her aid," Treadwell said.

"When my headlights came upon them the man left and the woman I saw had been stabbed and was bleeding," Treadwell explained. "I helped her to the sidewalk and tried to stop the bleeding."

The victim was identified as Kim Ellen Tunkle, 54, by her brother, Richard Tunkle, who rushed to the scene.

"I understand she was stabbed multiple times, punctured her lung," said Richard Tunkle. "She was out jogging, is what I understand."

Treadwell said the victim told him while they waited for an ambulance that she thought that in addition to her attacker, there was another man waiting nearby in a car.

"The assailant took off immediately," said Treadwell. "I didn't get a good look at him."

Kim Ellen Tunkle was taken to a hospital where she is in stable condition and is expected to survive, according to DeKalb County police officials.
