Suspect Arrested In Buckhead Assaults

Posted: 10:59 am EDT March 13, 2009Updated: 6:31 pm EDT March 13, 2009

A suspect was in custody Friday in a series of assaults and attempted abductions in Buckhead and northeast Atlanta, thanks to a Crime Stoppers report on Channel 2 Action News.

Police said someone recognized the car driven by the perpetrator after watching a Crime Stoppers report about the attacks on Channel 2 Action News at 5 on Thursday. Video obtained by Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt showed a vehicle police believe was driven by the attacker. Authorities described the vehicle as a silver or gray 1995 to '99 Buick Riviera.

When police took the suspect into custody Friday, they also impounded the car.

Police declined to name the suspect on Friday because they said the investigation was still ongoing. Authorities said the suspect was being held on an unrelated warrant. Police said attack victims would be asked to view lineups that include the suspect.

The latest attack came Thursday morning at an apartment complex on Canterbury Road in northeast Atlanta.

Khalilah Saunders, who lives at the apartments, heard the victim.

“I heard her screaming … very, very loud,” said Saunders.

Saunders started carrying Mace last year after she was attacked in the same parking lot.

Atlanta Police Detective Tez Peavy said the woman in Thursday morning’s attack got away, but other victims haven’t been as lucky.
