Oprah Makes Surprise Christmas Donation To Atlanta School

Students at Atlanta’s Ron Clark Academy, who became an Internet sensation in the 2008 historic presidential election, are receiving one of Oprah Winfrey's favorite things – generosity.

The television host, media mogul and philanthropist opened her heart and wallet in an unexpected way.

“I was at school on Christmas Eve because I had a meeting,” said Ron Clark. “I looked over and saw the box of mail. Usually I don’t touch the mail to avoid making a big mess,” said Clark.

What happened next left Clark speechless.

“I saw one letter that said 'attention Ron Clark' in bold letters,” Clark said. “And I said 'maybe it won’t hurt if I open this,'" said Clark.

Clark said he didn’t recognize the name on the return label on the FedEx package.

“Ron, I applaud you for the profound difference you’re making with your passion for teaching and you’re having so much fun. I always knew you had a special gift and you’re using it to the highest calling. You are a dynamic and powerful role model…Bravo, Bravo,” stated the letter from Winfrey.

Clark said then something fell on the floor.

“I picked it up. It was a sheet of paper. And I realized the sheet of paper was actually a check made out to the Ron Clark Academy for $365,000,” said Clark.

Clark read the letter to students on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s nice when our hard work is validated, when people support us and say they believe in us,” said Clark.

'The Oprah Winfrey Show' airs weekdays on WSB-TV.
