Woman Crashes Into New Jail Hours After Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Posted: 11:51 am EST December 10, 2008

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new Rockdale County Jail in the afternoon and by midnight a car had crashed through the front of the building.

According to a police report, a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to pull over a 2000 Dodge Durango on Chambers Drive near the sheriff’s office Monday night.

Police said the driver finally stopped outside a building next to the new jail – where officials had just held the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

Officials said they approached the driver and she said she was having problems and needed to go to the hospital. Police said that’s when the driver revved her engine and drove her vehicle towards a patrol car.

"(The woman) then turned right into the parking lot of the new Rockdale County Jail and traveled towards the front door. (She) then jumped the (curb), crashing through the front doors to the new Rockdale County Jail," the police report stated.

Police said after a brief struggle, she was taken into custody.

Police said she was taken to Rockdale Medical Center to be evaluated. The case has been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol.
