SMYRNA, Ga. -- Smyrna officers and a Cobb County sheriff's deputy said a Smyrna woman let a pit bull loose on them when they tried to serve a warrant.

Lidia Paravanta, 26, is facing a felony aggravated assault charge.

Officers said they were attempting to serve a simple battery warrant on Paravanta and they obtained information that indicated she had been in possession of a handgun and was considered armed and dangerous. Officers said they established a perimeter and tried to get Paravanta to surrender.

Officers said while trying to persuade her to surrender, she released her pit bull and sent it out to attack officers.

The dog charged one of the Smyrna officers and the officer shot the dog to avoid serious injury, police said. The dog died immediately at the scene.

Parvanta was taken into custody without further incident. Another person was found hiding in the residence and a loaded 9mm handgun was also found, police said.

Parvanta was immediately turned over to the Cobb County Sheriffs Office on the outstanding warrant for simple battery.

Parvanta was charged aggravated assault on a police officer for sending her dog out to attack police. She is being held at the Cobb County Jail on $15,000 bond.
