Stepdad Kills Teen, Himself; Boy's Mom Says Husband Was Abusive

The mother of a slain 14-year-old boy spoke out Wednesday for the first time.

Anthony Olbert was shot three times Sunday afternoon in the driveway of a quiet Newnan subdivision. His mother’s husband shot and killed the boy and then committed suicide in a jealous rage, according to police.

Anthony’s mother said she was a victim of domestic violence. She agreed to talk with Channel 2 to get a message out to other abused women.

Anthony Olbert was Michela Duplechain’s only son. “He was like a breath of fresh air,” said Duplechain. “He was my pride and joy from the time he was born to the day he was taken away.”

Anthony was killed by Reggie Hines, Duplechian’s husband of just two months. “All I saw was a black gun,” said Duplechain.

Duplechain and her family were moving excess furniture to a relative’s house. Hines thought she was moving out.

“He thought I was leaving him and I said, ‘Babe, I’m not going anywhere.’” said Duplechain.

Duplechain said Hines had been possessive and controlling from the time she met him earlier this year. She said he had a dark side. “It was like night and day,” she said. “I knew that wasn’t the man I fell in love with.”

She said the man she married was sweet and loving but he could change with just a look. Duplechain said Hines beat her dozens of times. “And every time he hit me, he stopped me from dialing 911 by saying, ‘Pumpkin, you know I didn’t mean to do that,’” she said.

Duplechain said Hines was always sorry afterward and would beg for forgiveness and would promise it wouldn’t happen again.

“He seemed like he wanted to be better, he wanted to be good,” said Duplechain. “I don’t know if he didn’t know how to love.”

After counseling just a week after apologizing to Duplechain and their church, he wrestled her to the floor and attempted to strangle her, she said.

“And I looked at him with tears in my eyes and I said, ‘Babe, is this God’s best for me,’” said Duplechain.

Sunday in the driveway, he came after Duplechain and her son.

“It’s too much for me. I’m not supposed to be burying my angel,” said Duplechain.

The shooting stopped only when Hines killed himself.

“You can’t change a person. You see? That was my mistake,” said Duplechain.
