Fulton Calls Special Meeting To Discuss Voting Hours

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections announced Saturday that it would hold a special meeting on Monday.The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the possible extension of voting hours on Tuesday, said Jessica Corbitt, with the Fulton County Office of Community Relations.More than 2 million registered voters have taken part in advanced or early voting, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's office.SLIDESHOW: Advance Voting Lines In Metro Atlanta
This represents 35 percent of all registered voters in the state. Of those who voted, 89 percent voted in person and 11 percent voted by mail.On Friday, U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia was among the legislators who gathered at the state Capitol to protest early voting problems in metro Atlanta. Lewis called for federal intervention in the state to clear the way for extended hours, more voting machines and more poll workers.Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel said her office doesn't have the authority to extend early voting, a decision she said must be made at the county level."Extension of poll hours and other modifications to voting procedures must be pre-cleared by the Department of Justice," said Corbitt.
TEAM 2 COVERAGE: Advance Voting ProblemsClayton County officials made a last ditch effort Friday afternoon to extend its early voting, but by Friday night, the Justice Department had denied its request.Channel 2 has learned that Fulton County will not request that the U.S. Justice Department extend early voting through the weekend. Officials told Channel 2 they didn't have enough time to get everything arranged.Fulton County officials told Channel 2 that voters who were in line by 7 p.m. Friday would have the opportunity to vote in its final day of advance voting.Some counties said they needed the weekend to prepare for Tuesday's election.But early voting continued Saturday in Coweta County at the county administration building on East Broad Street in Newnan.Coweta County, located about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta, received federal approval to hold Saturday voting in 1986.Last weekend, hundreds took advantage of the weekend voting opportunity there.
