DeKalb County police said they believe a teenager playing with a gun accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old high school freshman Wednesday afternoon.

DeKalb County dispatchers said the shooting happened near the Eagles Run Apartments in the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road.

Police said Tyshiana Simmons was shot in the left side of her chest. She was taken to an area hospital where she later died.

  • Simmons was a freshman at McNair High School. "She was very sweet. She could get along with everybody," said the victim's friend, Minnie Trice. "It's just not going to be the same without her."

Police said Simmons went to the apartments to visit her boyfriend and another teenaged boy. Investigators said one of the teens picked up the gun and it somehow fired, killing Simmons.

"They didn't do it on purpose, I know they didn't do it on purpose," said Trice.

"That was his girlfriend. We couldn't even turn around to talk to his mom, he was hurting so bad. She said, 'My son doesn't ever cry,' and he's crying. He was hurting," said neighbor Mariam Grant.

DeKalb police questioned both teen boys. They released one and charged the other with involuntary manslaughter. The names of the boys are not being released.
