  • Authorities said the driver, also 17, was traveling southbound on Ebenezer Road when he encountered a curve and lost control of the 2005 Nissan Altima.

Authorities said the vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

Authorities identified the victim as Mariyam Crossley of Conyers, a senior at Heritage High School.

"She was pretty much one of the true friends that I had...I could call on her at any time and she's not here anymore," said a close friend of the victim.

Police have not released the name of the driver or the 16-year-old backseat passenger who was treated and released from Rockdale Medical Center. The driver was airlifted to an area hospital.

Police said there were no contributing factors in the accident, such as drugs or alcohol. They said they do not expect to charge the teen driver, who also attends Heritage High.
