Gun Jammed When Killer Tried To Shoot Victim's Mother

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 – updated: 10:58 am EDT October 8, 2008

A teenager and his dog were shot and killed during a home invasion in southeast Atlanta late Monday night. The teen's mother escaped injury when the killer's gun jammed.

Devontae Alexander Jones, 17, was shot in the head as he hid in a closet in his home at 67 Atlanta Avenue just before midnight, according to Lt. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta Police Department.

"He went back there after suspects made entry into the house and he tried to barricade himself in a back bedroom," said Meadows.

One of the three suspects found the Carver High School student hiding in the closet and shot him in the head.

The gunman also shot and killed the Jones' family dog.

Then he turned the gun on Devontae Jones' mother.

"The victim's mother was an intended victim but for some reason the weapon jammed and she ultimately escaped from the residence," said Meadows.

Detectives said nothing was taken from the house.
