Residents of a gated DeKalb County apartment complex became victims of a series of car break-ins, and police are pointing fingers at a group of evicted tenants they believe may be responsible.

Ashes of a dead relative were among the items stolen from cars in the parking lot of the Amli at Clairmont Apartments. The complex is located in the 3000 block of Clairmont Road in Tucker.

"I'm hoping they catch these people …because one lady's father's ashes were stolen. It's ridiculous and it's disgusting," said Corinna Owen, whose belongings were also taken.

“My bank statement was stolen, a lot of my tools, personal effects,” said Owen said.

Police said at least 16 other cars were broken into Thursday night. DeKalb County crime scene investigators spent part of their Friday examining targeted cars for fingerprints and blood.

Police said they believe the suspected former residents who they say committed the crimes are angry at management for eviction.

Devlin English said his losses totaled hundreds of dollars after thieves targeted his new car.

“A 3-day-old FJ cruiser and they stole my gun, two cameras, a cell phone and $800 in cash,” English said. Residents said this isn’t the first time an incident like this has happened. They said someone broke into several cars two days ago.
