A 5-year-old boy witnessed a stabbing Thursday between a couple that left the woman dead and the man hospitalized in critical condition.

The fight began in an apartment off Deerfield Parkway and spilled out onto the breezeway of the unit, according to Milton Police.

Investigators said they believe 25-year-old Romero Furman stabbed 33-year-old Marianela Smith to death. Police said Furman then stabbed himself in an attempt to commit suicide.

Smith's 5-year-old son was at the home. He was uninjured.

"We're not sure of their exact relationship, whether they are married or not," said Lt. Shawn McCarty of the Milton Police Department. "But this stabbing did stem out of a domestic dispute."

The five-year-old boy police found in the apartment told officers he saw the entire incident. He was not injured and was taken into protective custody until family members could be found.

Furman is in critical condition at the hospital. Furman will be charged with murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
