Police: Grady Worker Stole Elderly Patient's Rent; Went To Spa

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 – updated: 2:23 pm EDT September 3, 2008

A former Grady Memorial Hospital worker apologized after police arrested him again for allegedly stealing from patients. Police say the worker stole an elderly patient's rent money in 2007 and spent it at the spa.

Jawara apologized after he was arrested Tuesday for the third time. On all three occasions, he is accused of stealing valuables and money from patients at Grady. "To everybody that I've ever did anything wrong to, I'm sorry," said Jawara.

As Jawara was led to jail, he told Channel 2 why he did it.

"And, you know, once you work with a lot of distraught people, deaths and stuff like that you get kind of cold. And you don't really be feeling what everybody feels. And going through financial stress...I just made the wrong choices," said Jawara.

"My thing is, when you can't handle a job, you quit. So it's no excuse," said Charlene Benton.

Police said Benton's mother, Jane Pounds, was one of Jawara's victims. Pounds was transported to Grady Hospital for a heart ailment. Records showed Jawara handled her belongings. Pounds told her daughter to get her $1,100 worth of money orders from her bag, but when Benton checked, her mom's rent and utility bill money was gone.

Benton said her mother was released from the hospital but worried about how to pay her rent.

A couple of days later, Pounds was dead.

There is another reason Benton said she doesn't think Jawara's apology was sincere. "Three of the money orders went to a spa. I'm not buying that," said Benton.

Detectives confirm Jawara spent $800 of the stolen money at a spa.

Alan Armstrong, whose late wife's wedding and engagement rings were stolen, said this is another example of why Jawara should be in jail. Armstrong said a petition effort is underway to make that happen.
