Baggy Pants Slow Down Suspect In Downtown Atlanta

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 – updated: 6:03 am EDT August 28, 2008

A man fleeing Atlanta police was shot in the torso outside the Fulton County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon.

Atlanta Police Detective Anthony Gentile said officers were chasing a white Toyota that screeched to a halt in front of the courthouse Wednesday afternoon. The man driving the car then took off on foot, and Gentile says police followed him for about 100 yards.

Police said the suspect tripped while trying to keep up his baggy pants; fell and pulled out a gun. Police fired two shots and hit the man in the lower torso.

The suspect's name has not been released. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

Don Plummer with the Fulton County Superior Court told Channel 2 the shooting was not related to the court.

A 2-block section of Pryor Street was shut down.
