MARIETTA, Ga. -- An attorney told Channel 2 he has fielded hundreds of calls from people who say they got sick from a liquid vitamin. The "Total Body Formula" supplement is already linked to 197 illnesses in several states."You do a cupful in orange juice. I was trying to get the right nutrition by taking vitamins and minerals," said Marietta resident Edgar Gurley.Gurley went from healthy to desperately sick in a matter months. "All my hair fell out. All of it," said Gurley.

The 78-year-old had been using "Total Body Formula" -- a fruit-flavored, liquid vitamin supplement for years. He said he never suspected his fatigue, joint pain, hair and nail loss and kidney failure had anything to do with his vitamins. Throughout Gurley's countless doctor visits and a hospital stay -- no one knew why he was sick until he went to buy more of his supplement."They told me it had been banned from the market," said Gurley.If you go to the company's website www.TotalBodyTeam.com it warns several batches have excessive amounts of the mineral selenium. In excess, selenium caused hair and nail loss, cramps, diarrhea, joint pain and fatigue. Adverse reactions to the product have been reported in six states. The Woodstock, Ga. offices of the distributor have been shut down."Was action ultimately taken? Yes. The question is how timely was it. And I think for now, the initial timeline seems to suggest that they waited, I think, too long," said Gurley's attorney, Mark Zamora."My biggest fear is going in to dialysis," said Gurley.The vitamin store where Gurley bought the product in Cobb County pulled it from the shelves months ago and they have a warning up from the Federal Drug Administration.A lawyer for Total Body released a statement Monday that said, "Total Body has been in the dietary supplement business since 1996 and has had no problems...until the events of earlier this year...Total Body, the distributor, relies upon the manufacturer and bottler to correctly prepare the product in accordance with the product label," said attorney Rod Cate.
