CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A grand jury has indicted the father of twin boys on infant starvation charges several months after his arrest.James Alvin McCart III, 23, is accused of nearly starving to death his then 13-month-old twin boys. McCart was arrested eight months ago along with the children's mother, after the boys were brought to the hospital by other family members.Jurors handed up the 10-count indictment this week against McCart. The children's mother, Tessa Noel Zelek, 23, and grandmother, Christi Zelek, are also expected to be indicted.SLIDESHOW: Police Photos Of Twins (WARNING: Pictures May Be Disturbing)
Christi Zelek, 51, who is a special education coordinator with the Henry County school system, was charged in November with failure to report suspected child abuse. As an educator, state law requires her to report suspected child abuse. Police said Christi Zelek returned to her daughter's house after finding the boys and cleaned up before calling authorities.According to the indictment, the parents "did willfully fail to act, to wit: did fail to provide adequate food and drink," leaving their children "severely malnourished."
Some doctors called it the worst case of child neglect they had ever seen. The two children, who are now almost 2 years old, are with other relatives and are doing well. Hospital officials said if the children had not been discovered when they were, they would have died within days.Police believe both parents were addicted to prescription drugs at the time. McCart and Tessa Zelek have been charged with cruelty to children, contributing to the deprivation of minors and forgery of methadone prescriptions.According to police, both McCart and Tessa Zelek have accused the other of being at fault.
