The Varsity, the world’s largest drive-in restaurant and an Atlanta icon, is dishing up more than just its famous chilidogs, hamburgers and onion rings.

Saturday, patrons enjoyed free birthday cake, ice cream, and balloons in honor the restaurant’s 80th anniversary.

There was also a variety of entertainment, activities, and displays on the upper deck of the well-known downtown Atlanta location.

The celebration was free and open to the public Saturday.

The Varsity, established in 1928 by Frank Gordy, has six locations in metro-Atlanta. Its main location is downtown at 61 North Avenue.

Among the performers during Saturday's celebration: The Cool Whips, The Hibbert Brothers and The Planet Rock Experience.

Patrons also experienced the thrill of what it is like to drive an actual NASCAR race car by participating in the Coca-Cola NASCAR Experience simulator. Alongside it was Coke Zero’s Harley Davidson motorcycle, as well as a display of classic cars from the '50s.

The Varsity offered a five-minute sneak peek of its upcoming documentary film about the restaurant, its history and how Atlanta grew up around it.
