Gwinnett County Voters Defeat Plan To Extend MARTA Into County

MARTA Vote Split Between Party Lines

When Gwinnett County residents went to the polls Tuesday, they shared different views about a plan to extend MARTA service into the county.

Results from a non-binding straw poll showed the issue was defeated by residents who remain split on the idea.

Democrats overwhelmingly showed support for an extra 1-cent sales tax to bring MARTA's rail line into the county, with 70 percent of them voting yes. But 63 percent of republican voters turned down the idea.

MARTA’s first train, the East Line, began operating between Avondale and Georgia State Station in June 1979. It also marked the start of MARTA’s combined bus and rail service.

MARTA currently provides rail transit to Fulton and DeKalb counties.

Residents in Cobb and Gwinnett rejected a plan in the past for MARTA to provide rail transit service to those counties.
