One person has been killed in a small plane crash in Cobb County, Kennesaw police confirmed Tuesday.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Max Gysin of Kennesaw. Gysin, who operated a small motel chain, was returning from Vero Beach, Fla., after making a stop in Albany, his wife, Jean, said.

The light plane crashed just after 3 p.m. near Sumit Woods Drive. News Chopper 2 HD flew over the scene and a lot of smoke and flames could be seen pouring from the plane.

The Federal Aviation Adminstration said the plane was attempting to land at McCollum Field when it crashed nose first. The plane crashed in a wooded area.

Authorities said Gysin was the only person on the plane.

Officials said the plane appears to be a Socata TBM 700. The Socata TBM 700 is a French high performance single engine turboprop.

The plane is registered to Flying Max, LLC of Vero Beach, Fla.
