Suspect Identified In Shootout With 2 Atlanta Police Officers

Authorities identified the suspect killed in a shootout with Atlanta police that left two officers injured.

Atlanta police spokesman Eric Schwartz said 28-year-old Montellis Clark was killed after he began shooting at officers investigating a possible burglary.

Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington said the officers approached three individuals sitting in front of a house in the 900 block of Cascade Road in southwest Atlanta just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Pennington said one of the individuals had his hands in his pocket, pulled out an automatic weapon and opened fire. Pennington said the officers fired back, striking all three individuals.

A spokesman for Grady Hospital said one officer was shot in the face and had a bullet lodged behind his ear; the other was bruised on his chest when a bullet struck his bulletproof vest.

“One officer has an entrance wound to his face. The projectile is lodged right behind his ear. He has no evidence that there are problems with his brain because of it,” said Dr. Jeffrey Salomone.

Both officers were treated and released from Grady Hospital.

At least two people were taken away from the crime scene in handcuffs.

Pennington said the officers were part of zone four's crime suppression unit, which has been working to fight burglaries in the area.

A witness told Channel 2 he thought the house was vacant where police said the three individuals were sitting.

Georgia State Patrol officers assisted at the scene and helped secure the route to Grady hospital.

No troopers were injured or involved in shooting.

Several of the officers' colleagues gathered at Grady hospital, according to a WSB-TV field crew.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released.

Authorities blocked off the area surrounding the 900 block of Cascade Road for quite some time to collect evidence.

Members of the U.S. Marshal's Office are also at the scene.
