ST. MARYS, Ga. -- Seven people from Jacksonville, Fla. were arrested after police said they kidnapped a St. Marys man and threatened to kill him unless his parents came up with $2,000.

The St. Marys police got a call about 9:30 a.m. Saturday from a woman who said a person calling himself Mike called and said he wanted $1,000 or he would kill her 39-year-old son.

The mother gave police the caller ID, which was a Jacksonville telephone number.

When "Mike" called back, the mother told him, "Stop hurting him or you will not get any money." The caller told her to go to a phone booth on Golfair Boulevard in Jacksonville with the money and expect a telephone call.

The mother told the caller she was not familiar with Jacksonville and they agreed to meet at the Georgia Welcome Center.

With the cooperation of St. Marys police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the parents withdrew $1,000 in three separate ATM transactions. The parents then got a call that Mike wanted $2,000 and to meet in the Shoney's parking lot in 10 minutes.

Officers from the St. Marys and Kingsland police, the Camden County Sheriff's Office and the GBI took up positions around Shoney's and waited.

When a van with Florida plates parked in a gas station across the street, the officers rushed in and took three men and three women in the van into custody. A pickup truck driven by the son reportedly kidnapped pulled into a Chic-Fil-A restaurant parking lot, also across the street.

As police were gathering evidence and writing reports, the seventh suspect, William Coleman, got into the pickup the victim had driven and took off. A St. Marys officer pursued the truck, which refused to pull over.

The chase ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a minivan near Interstate 95 at Exit 3. Coleman was injured and taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center for treatment.

The six people in the van -- aged 17 to 20 -- were charged with kidnapping. When Coleman was cleared by the hospital, he was also taken to the Camden County Jail, but it was not clear if he faced any charges related to the kidnapping.

Police reports did not indicate why the son was driving separately or if he knew any of those accused of abducting him.

Kingsland police, the FBI and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office assisted St. Marys police in the case.
