Georgia Tech Football Player Charged With Campus Rape

Monday, June 30, 2008 – updated: 6:28 pm EDT June 30, 2008

A Georgia Tech football player has been charged with a rape that allegedly occurred on the Georgia Tech campus a few months ago.

Officials said Jerrard Tarrant, 19, of Carrollton has been charged in the incident. Tarrant was arrested after a woman reported the alleged rape to DeKalb County police early the morning of April 25.

"He is in fact, innocent. We have done some extensive investigations, interviewed numerous witnesses in this case and at the proper time we fully intend to present our defense, the real version of events, what happened in this case," said Tarrant's attorney, Charles Lea.

Monday, Tarrant was suspended indefinitely from the Georgia Tech football team pending the outcome of the case, according to a statement released by coach Paul Johnson.

  • “These charges against Jerrard are something that we take very seriously,” said Johnson.

Tarrant is a Carrollton High School graduate who rated the No. 43 prospect in Georgia by Rivals and No. 47 by Scout.com. He was also named Top 50 in Georgia selection by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Macon Telegraph.

He was a redshirt freshman in 2007 and was considered a strong candidate to start at cornerback opposite Jahi Word-Daniels in 2008.

Tarrant was released Saturday on $40,000 bail.
