MARTA Readies For Gun-Toting Passengers

Concealed Weapons Will Be Allowed

Posted: 6:20 am EDT June 30, 2008

Beginning on Tuesday the passenger next to you on a MARTA train or bus legally could be carrying a gun.

A new law allows concealed weapons permit holders on public transportation.

MARTA officials lobbied against the proposal, but state lawmakers approved the new law earlier this year.

Some MARTA riders are worried.

"Some people don't always think before they act and in a tense situation they could act in a way that could be dangerous," said MARTA passenger Bonnie Cook.

MARTA's police chief said other cities with similar laws haven't seen a rise in violence.
