Mother Speaks Out After Son Brutally Beaten

Beating Victim Has Remained In A Coma

Friday, June 13, 2008 – updated: 11:33 am EDT June 13, 2008

The mother of a man beaten so savagely he has been in a coma for almost six months is speaking out.

Patricia Bonhomme told WSB-TV Channel 2 anchor Jovita Moore that her son, Darius Miller, 41, remains unresponsive to her and doctors.

"If you tell him 'Darius, squeeze my hand' he cannot do that," said Bonhomme. "If you say 'Darius, move your legs' he cannot do that.'"

Bonhomme will explain what's next for Miller in her interview with Jovita Moore on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News at 5 and 6.

Miller was attacked after trying to stop a group of men videotaping women outside a nearby night club around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police report. Witnesses said the men turned on Miller when he attempted to stop them.

Miller was escorting Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's two daughters, Kai and Callie, along with another woman to their car when the beating took place.

Officer James C. Polite, an Atlanta police spokesman, said, "He was just outnumbered and overpowered."

Miller was taken to Emory Crawford Long Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition and has received dozens of visitors.

Apollo Holmes, 21, was charged with aggravated assault in December in connection with the attack, but is still awaiting trial.

One of Miller's friends said the visitors have included Takeo Spikes, the professional football player; Mason "Mase" Betha, the former rapper; Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, the singer formerly with the group TLC; Ronnie DeVoe, the singer who rose to fame with New Edition; and Keshia Knight Pulliam, the actress who as a child played Rudy Huxtable on "The Cosby Show."

The friend, 38-year-old Stacie Andrews of Atlanta, said, "Takeo's there every day."

Andrews is a bodybuilding and figure show competitor. She told Channel 2 Miller is the brother she never had. "He's a very genuine person," she said.

Andrews said some of the celebrity visitors -- including Pulliam -- were Miller's clients.
