ATLANTA -- The parents of a 16-year-old girl forced to have an abortion by her boyfriend’s mother said that mother deserves more than a year in jail.Cindi Cook received a 12-month sentence for saying she was the girl’s mother and signing a parental notification form allowing a clinic to perform the procedure. The DeKalb County Solicitor General continues to investigate the clinic’s role in the abortion to see if they followed state law.The girl’s parents said they want to know why the crime Cook committed is only a misdemeanor and they said they’re going to work to change the law to a much stiffer punishment.“It someone else does this they’re going to get punished for it. It’s not going to be a misdemeanor,” said the girl’s mother, who did not want to be identified. The parents of the 16-year-old girl do not have kind words for Cook. “She’s an awful person,” said the girl’s mother.“I just point-blank asked her, ‘How could you have done this,’” said the girl’s father.Cook was sentenced to a year in jail after prosecutors said she pressured her son’s girlfriend, without her parents’ knowledge, to have an abortion.Authorities said Cook found the Northside Women’s Clinic, which doesn’t require a parent to be present. The DeKalb Solicitor General said Cook signed a parental notification form pretending to be the girl’s mother.“It’s difficult to put into words what it has done to us,” said the girl’s mother. The girl’s parents said their daughter cried and begged Cook not to force her to abort her baby. They said that’s when Cook turned up the pressure.“She threatened her that she wouldn’t see (her boyfriend) anymore,” said the girl’s mother.Testimony indicated Cook didn’t want the baby to interrupt her son’s plans for college. The girl’s parents said Cook wasn’t the only one responsible for what happened.“We feel like the clinic has some serious responsibility here as well,” said attorney S. Fenn Little.WSB-TV Channel 2 reporter Tom Jones called and went by the clinic for a response to the allegations but the calls have not been returned as of this writing.
