Ice Cream Truck Kills Toddler

Monday, June 2, 2008 – updated: 10:47 am EDT June 2, 2008

A two-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by an ice cream truck in Forest Park.

Clayton County police said they are not planning on pressing charges against the driver of an ice cream truck involved in the deadly accident. Officials said a toddler heard the truck driving through his neighborhood and ran out of his parent’s house.

“He simply did not see the child. It’s a tragic accident,” said Capt. Greg Dickens with the Clayton County Police Department.

Clayton County police said it happened Sunday evening just after 6 p.m.

The driver, who has additional monitors mounted on the sides of his truck, told police he checked his mirrors as he pulled out but he didn’t see the child coming.

“This is what this gentleman does for a career, working with young people, working with kids, so he has to have a heart for this to start with and then this incident takes place, he's totally distraught over this incident,” said Dickens.

Police believed the toddler died instantly when he was hit. The boy’s parents sat along the curb trying to comfort one another as police accessed the scene.

“They were having an outing. Anyone in the blink of an eye can lose a two-year-old for a second. The two-year-old hears the sound of the ice cream truck, where do two-year-olds go but to the ice cream truck? Mom and dad find out he's gone, they go looking for him and that's where they found him,” said Dickens.

The child’s name has not yet been released.
