Two Dead Near Church; Home Renter Found Locked In Trunk

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 – updated: 3:08 pm EDT May 21, 2008

Two men were found shot to death Tuesday morning near a southeast Atlanta church. Officials said another man was found alive in a car trunk.

The body of a man was discovered in the parking lot of the Woodland Hills Baptist Church at the intersection of Woodland Ave. and E. Confederate Ave. Neighbors called police when they heard shots fired about 1 a.m.

"A blood trail lead from the back of the church to a residence on E. Confederate," Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows told WSB-TV Channel 2 reporter Anissa Centers. "When units went inside the house they found another man dead."

Both victims had been shot, according to Meadows. Investigators think the incident may have started as a home invasion robbery at the house on E. Confederate. The man found near the church may have escaped by crashing through a window.

Authorities told Channel 2 they found a man who rented the house on E. Confederate locked in a car trunk on Hill Street. A passerby heard the man screaming and he was rescued and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Scene Unit was called in to help gather evidence at the two crime scenes.
