Attoney Indicted on Fraud Charges

POSTED: 4:06 pm EDT May 17, 2008

An indigent defense attorney has been indicted on charges he submitted fake paperwork to bilk thousands of dollars from Gwinnett County.

Christopher T. Adams faces 35 charges ranging from theft by taking to giving false statements. According to the 11-page indictment, he filed bogus invoices with the county to collect money for work he never did for clients too poor to afford an attorney.

The indictment also alleges Adams tried to recruit a man to help in his scheme.

The 40-year-old Lawrenceville attorney was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on Thursday on $27,600 bond.

Adams did not immediately return a call for comment from The Associated Press.
