Woman Kidnapped At Gunpoint From MARTA Bus

Friday, May 16, 2008 – updated: 6:46 pm EDT May 16, 2008

Channel 2 is working to find out exactly what has become of a woman who was kidnapped from a MARTA bus Friday. The man accused in the kidnapping surrendered after a standoff -- but the woman wasn't with him.

Chopper 2 was there as SWAT officers approached the house on Tree Bark Trail where the gunman was barricaded. Officials said they still aren't sure if he was holding the woman hostage inside that house.

The entire incident began when a man dragged a woman off a MARTA bus on Snapfinger Woods and Wesley Chapel after blocking its path with his vehicle, according to officials.

"He forced that bus to the side of the road. He then forced a female passenger at gun point off of that bus," said Mekka Parish with the DeKalb County Police Department.

Police narrowed the location of the alleged kidnapper to a home on Tree Bark Tail. They cordoned off the neighborhood, called in a SWAT team and kept cars from out of the area. Negotiators arrived and quickly convinced the gunman to surrender.

"It's shocking because he's my friend. You know, I just saw him the other day," said a neighbor. "He always talked about staying of trouble. I didn't know he would snap like this."

MARTA police have not yet released the name of the man under arrest. They also haven't released any information on the whereabouts of the woman who was taken hostage. Officials said it is possible she could've escaped during the short time she was held.
