Mother's Day Storms Flatten Homes; Knock Out Power Across Atlanta

A Mother's Day storm moved through north Georgia early Sunday morning, flattening homes and knocking out power to thousands in metro Atlanta and across the state.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency reported two people were killed in Laurens County, in East Central Georgia. Laurens County authorities have not yet identified the fatalities, which were found in a the rubble of a mobile home in Dublin. Across the state, authorities reported storm damage in at least 19 counties.

Georgia Power officials said, as of Sunday afternoon, at least 72,000 residents were without electricity across the state, mostly concentrated in the metro Atlanta area and the Macon area. Crews fanned out across the area to repair downed lines and get electricity flowing again.

  • In Clayton County, the fire department reported at least 43 homes in the Catherine Court subdivision and the Stagecoach subdivision in Ellenwood were heavily damaged and considered uninhabitable. About 120 more suffered lesser damage. WSB-TV reporter Diana Davis was at one home on Vannity Joys Lane that was destroyed by the high winds. All that was left was a pile of rubble on the foundation. Fortunately, no one was home when the house collapsed.

    Other homes in the neighborhood had siding ripped off leaving gaping holes in the walls. At one home the strong winds flipped a large box truck over onto a car parked next to it.

    In Carroll County, high winds ripped the roofs off some homes. Residents claimed a tornado hit that part of the state, but that has not been confirmed. At least one home was moved off its foundation.

    In Bowdon in Carroll County WSB-TV reporter Ryan Young reports toppled trees are blocking some roads.

    In Carrollton, WSB-TV reporter Ross Cavitt reports trees down throughout the city, several dozen homes damaged and substantial damage to autos and the showroom of Scott Evans Nissan on Bankhead Highway. Other businesses were also hit.

    There were also early reports of similar damage in Douglas, Troup, Rockdale and Newton counties.

    Fulton County Sheriff Myron Freeman dispatched deputies to go house-to-house in parts of South Fulton to check on residents. He reported heavy damage in the Berkshire Place subdivision in the Jones Rd. area.

    The storms brough heavy rain to drought-parched north Georgia. Some areas received up to one-and-a-half inches in several hours.
